xīnɡ xīnɡ jiǎo ɡōnɡ 、 piān qí fǎn yǐ 。
騂 騂 角 弓 、 翩 其 反 矣 。
xiōnɡ di hūn yīn 、 wú xū yuǎn yǐ 。
兄 弟 昏 姻 、 无 胥 远 矣 。
Well fashioned is the bow adorned with horn,
And swift is its recoil.
Brothers and relatives by affinity,
Should not be treated distantly.
ěr zhī yuǎn yǐ 、 mín xū rán yǐ 。
尔 之 远 矣 、 民 胥 然 矣 。
ěr zhī jiāo yǐ 、 mín xū xiào yǐ 。
尔 之 教 矣 、 民 胥 效 矣 。
When you keep yours at a distance,
The people all do the same with theirs.
What you teach,
The people all imitate.
cǐ lìnɡ xiōnɡ di 、 chuò chuò yǒu yù 。
此 令 兄 弟 、 绰 绰 有 裕 。
bú lìnɡ xiōnɡ di 、 jiāo xiānɡ wéi yù 。
不 令 兄 弟 、 交 相 为 愈 。
Those brothers who are good,
Continue to display much generous feeling;
But between brothers who are not good,
Their intercourse is marked by troubles.
mín zhī wú liánɡ 、 xiānɡ yuàn yì fānɡ 。
民 之 无 良 、 相 怨 一 方 。
shòu jué bú rànɡ 、 zhì yú yǐ sī wánɡ 。
受 爵 不 让 、 至 于 已 斯 亡 。
People who have no conscience,
Repine against each other, each one holding his own point of view;
One gets a place, and shows no humility -
Till they all come to ruin.
lǎo mǎ fǎn wéi jū 、 bú ɡù qí hòu 。
老 马 反 为 驹 、 不 顾 其 后 。
rú shí yí yù 、 rú zhuó kǒnɡ qǔ 。
如 食 宜 饫 、 如 酌 孔 取 。
An old horse, notwithstanding, thinks himself a colt,
And has no regard to the future.
It is like craving a superabundance of food,
And an excess of drink.
wú jiāo náo shēnɡ mù 、 rú tú tú fù 。
毋 教 猱 升 木 、 如 涂 涂 附 。
jūn zǐ yǒu huī yóu 、 xiǎo rén yǔ shǔ 。
君 子 有 徽 猷 、 小 人 与 属 。
Do not teach a monkey to climb trees; -
[You act] like adding mud to one in the mud.
If the sovereign have good ways,
The small people will accord with them.
yǔ xuě biāo biāo 、 jiàn xiàn yuē xiāo 。
雨 雪 瀌 瀌 、 见 晛 曰 消 。
mò kěn xià yí 、 shì jū lóu jiāo 。
莫 肯 下 遗 、 式 居 娄 骄 。
The snow may have fallen abundantly,
But when it feels the sun's heat, it dissolves.
You are not willing to discountenance [those parties],
And so they become [more] troublesome and arrogant.
yǔ xuě fú fú 、 jiàn xiàn yuē liú 。
雨 雪 浮 浮 、 见 晛 曰 流 。
rú mán rú máo 、 wǒ shì yònɡ yōu 。
如 蛮 如 髦 、 我 是 用 忧 。
The snow may have fallen largely,
But when it feels the sun's heat, it flows away.
They become like the Man or the Mao; -
This is what make me sad.
