Heaven and Earth 12

Men Wu kuei and Ch'ih chang Man chi were watching the troops of King Wu.16 Ch'ih chang Man chi said, "He is no match for the man of the Yu clan. That's why he runs into all this trouble!" Men Wu kuei said, "Was the world already in good order when the man of the Yu clan came along to order it?

Or was it in disorder and later he brought it to order?" Ch'ih chang Man chi said, "Everybody wants to see the world well ordered. If it had been so already, what point would there have been in calling in the man of the Yu clan? The man of the Yu clan was medicine to a sore. But to wait until you go bald and then buy a wig, to wait until you get sick and then call for a doctor,, to prepare the medicine like a true filial son and present it to your loving father, wearing a grim and haggard look this the true sage would be ashamed to do.

In an age of Perfect Virtue the worthy are not honored, the talented are not employed. Rulers are like the high branches of a tree, the people like the deer of the fields. They do what is right but they do not know that this is righteousness. They love one another but they do not know that this is benevolence. They are truehearted but do not know that this is loyalty. They are trustworthy but do not know that this is good faith. They wriggle around like insects, performing services for one another, but do not know that they are being kind. Therefore they move without leaving any trail behind, act without leaving any memory of their deeds."

mén wú ɡuǐ yǔ chì zhānɡ mǎn jī , ɡuān yú wǔ wánɡ zhī shī 。 chì zhānɡ mǎn jī yuē : “ bù jí yǒu yú shì hū ! ɡù lí cǐ huàn yě 。 ”
门  无 鬼  与 赤  张    满  稽 , 观   于 武 王   之  师  。 赤  张    满  稽 曰  : “ 不 及 有  虞 氏  乎 ! 故 离 此 患   也 。 ”
mén wú ɡuǐ yuē : “ tiān xià jūn zhì ér yǒu yú shì zhì zhī xié , qí luàn ér hòu zhì zhī yǔ ? ” chì zhānɡ mǎn jī yuē : “ tiān xià jūn zhì zhī wéi yuàn , ér hé jì yǐ yǒu yú shì wéi ?
门  无 鬼  曰  : “ 天   下  均  治  而 有  虞 氏  治  之  邪  , 其 乱   而 后  治  之  与 ? ” 赤  张    满  稽 曰  : “ 天   下  均  治  之  为  愿   , 而 何 计 以 有  虞 氏  为  ?
yǒu yú shì zhī yào yánɡ yě , tū ér shī tì , bìnɡ ér qiú yī 。 xiào zǐ cāo yào yǐ xiū cí fù , qí sè qiáo rán , shènɡ rén xiū zhī 。 zhì dé zhī shì , bú shànɡ xián , bù shǐ nénɡ ;
有  虞 氏  之  药  疡   也 , 秃 而 施  髢 , 病   而 求  医 。 孝   子 操  药  以 修  慈 父 , 其 色 燋   然  , 圣    人  羞  之  。 至  德 之  世  , 不 尚    贤   , 不 使  能   ;
shànɡ rú biāo zhī , mín rú yě lù ; duān zhènɡ ér bù zhī yǐ wéi yì , xiānɡ ài ér bù zhī yǐ wéi rén ;
上    如 标   枝  , 民  如 野 鹿 ; 端   正    而 不 知  以 为  义 , 相    爱 而 不 知  以 为  仁  ;
shí ér bù zhī yǐ wéi zhōnɡ , dānɡ ér bù zhī yǐ wéi xìn ; chǔn dònɡ ér xiānɡ shǐ , bù yǐ wéi cì 。 shì ɡù xínɡ ér wú jì , shì ér wú chuán 。 ”
实  而 不 知  以 为  忠    , 当   而 不 知  以 为  信  ; 蠢   动   而 相    使  , 不 以 为  赐 。 是  故 行   而 无 迹 , 事  而 无 传    。 ”
